Epiphany for Rachael Breckon
Message to the world: don't buy our land.
Rachael's been writing a series for Straight Furrow on her time in Japan. Just recently she's been getting her head around 'whispers' that our government is going to prevent the sale of farmland to foreign buyers.
Her thoughts on the issue are very interesting, as were those she published previously about Japanese farming and farms and can be read here.
I was especially struck by this revelation of hers:
It dawned on me that here in New Zealand, while we may not be seeing the cultural significance of a product of farming such as rice, we too are beginning to believe there are aspects of farmland ownership that are more important than price, profit or productivity.
I'm with you on that Rachael and hope the process of 'believing' doesn't take forever!

Why resist? we could learn a few things watching foreigners looking after our land better than we are at the moment.
