Here's why I like living in Riverton ...
I was approached today by one of our town's respected church elders keen to share her idea of setting up an account at the local bank, where supporters of 'art on the water' could make a donation toward the cost of a resourse consent application. She said she'd attend to it on Monday and that the first deposit would be from her and her husband.
That's the spirit, isn't it!
Interestingly, there have been strong expressions of support from three of the churches on Riverton's main street and that's something we can celebrate!
(And we will!)

It is good news Robert! Perhaps these God bothering types are not as bad as some greenies think!!
Have you had anything to do with these people before or are they new allies?
Shunda - our Environment Centre has enjoyed tremendous support from the 'elders': priests, preachers etc. of main churches in the town for a very long time. Our recent Harvest Festival is an example where the Union Church (Methodist/Presbytarian) made the offer to hold a 'service of thanksgiving' at the culmination of the festival, which we were delighted to accept. It was very moving too and I blogged at the time about the degree of shared philosophy our two groups had. The Anglican church, through their priest and their 'driftwood art-admiring ways' their group cycling activities and their general environment-friendly approach have displayed great co-operativeness and the New Life Church similarly, have made their support for a number of our 'earthy' initiatives clear, in particular our enjoyment for spontaneous shared festivals where family and celebration of community are the focus.
I'm not sure that we have 'greenies' or 'God botherers' in our town. Are they a feature of yours?
Certainly we all know each other well here in Riverton and have lots of shared history.
I am jealous!!
Have been away from church for some time, it's the fellowship I miss, the sermons usually bore me to tears!!
You could start one of your own Shunda - a Rata(na)Church!
(A little 'cross-blog' joke there eh Shunda -

This 'unexpected donation' is the way the Universe works if we allow it its' process. It creates an opportunity for the community to express its uniqueness through whatever form it chooses - in this case through 'driftwood sculptures' - my gratitude goes to the couple who have offered this potential to our awesome ever-growing environment. Thanks also to Wayne for having the foresight to share his creativity with us (free of charge)!!
Poppy - you're right about the uniqueness of or community, that's for sure!
If we roll with that and allow it 's full expression, we'll have something both special and attractive out here.
(Have you seen the new driftwood piece? It's lovely!) I'll go and get a photograph right now!
So are you going to tell us the account number?
Good point Bio, you modern guy you!
Internet banking's the way foward and I'll post the account number tomorrow. Might even be in the paper!
Robert, My wife has asked me if you would let us come to one of your festivals!
A long drive, but sounds like it would be worth every km!!
Let you?
The invitation was sent long ago!
If you and your gaggle of yunkers aren't here, we'll be terrible dissapointed!
I'll keep you posted.
In the meantime, start sewing your costumes. For you, I'm thinking something from sack cloth, perhaps some ashes. John the Baptist?
Mrs Barunda, I'm thinking mardi gras. :-)
John the baptist wore a coat of 'camel hair'. Good luck with that one!
Careful of those Coasters Robert, we might take over.....
Ok Robert, we are looking for an excuse to head south, perhaps when the weather warms up for the younga barundas.
Though it is a balmy 17 degrees at my back door at the moment, winter? what's that!
We are looking at the atlas right now, it's a long way! You reckon we could do it in a day?
Always the well dressed one, that JtB! I can see him in his camel-hair jacket, moleskin trousers and crocodile-skin shoes!
I'm already very wary of Coasters, SouthernRightexoneofthoseI'mwaryof, but thanks for the head's up.
How do the wee Barundas travel Shunda? It's quite a stretch. I'd be looking to overnight, pitch the tent beside a babbling brook somewhere (not Haast - sandfly country!)
Either way, there's room here for Barundas here.
