We've got rain!

The water trucks had been running for several days, refilling water tanks in Otatara and Riverton and no doubt other rural Southland enclaves as well, but they won't be rolling today - we've had a couple of days of rain now and that'll be doing their job for them. How common is a winter drought down here I wonder?

Are you on a tank Shane?
I contend that every building with a roof should be collecting water and storing it, public buildings included.

I've been in Southland 33 yrs & wintertime seems to be the only time our tank gets very low. Luckily we have a bore for emergencies.

Hi Kieran - that bore or yours, has it's level dropped in recent times? I hear a lot of stories of sinking water tables around Southland, particularly out Tuatapere way. Naturally enough, the blame falls on the heavy takers of water, usually diary farmers.
We are lucky in having a spring on our place and I've dug a rough grotto that has a pool of what seems to be crystal clear water at its base.
