Looked like a beach scene at first glance but I'm going with cracked barley!
mmmm some type of grain. I bet it smelt good. We tried to use our grain left over from brewing to mix into a bread dough once. It worked, but was rather heavy on the fibre...
Anna, you're right. It had a delicious smell, malty and rich. I spilt some of the 'wort' on the kitchen floor and the next day it smelled like a ... brewery!
The grain we used was barley, though other grains can be used, even rice!
