I've been to book sales before but I've never been there the moment they open the doors to the keen book-buyers and today was no exception!
I had been determined to be at the Rotary Book Sale on time, with my running shoes on and my money clutched in my hand but even so, I was 20 minutes late. No matter, I found plenty of reading treasure, most of it on the 'gardening' trestle and much of it time-worn. I love the old gardening manuals, especially those that predate the careless use of modern chemical sprays and refer to them whenever I'm writing for the NZ Gardener. Their time will come again and that excellent advice written down 80 years ago will help us through when herbicides and pesticides made from oil will not be readily available.
After two hours of sifting through row after row of books, I staggered to my car under the weight of about 30 big, hard cover books, heavy with information and crying out for me to read them.
I'll begin tonight.
First up, Sutton's "The Culture of Vegetable and Flowers".
