It's summer and things are heating up around our beaches and rivers. Monkey Island, on the south coast has been declared 'out of bounds' for swimmers and shellfish gatherers, by Environment Southland, due to dairy effluent polluting the stream that flows into the sea around the island. The stream, reputedly, is running green. Meanwhile, Christchurch beaches reek of rotting sea lettuce, resulting from the poorly managed sewerage system which feeds into the estuary/sea system. Swimming there is out, even beach-walks have lost their appeal. Residents of Mosgiel too, are warned today to boil all of their water, even for showering, for reasons not entirely explained by the news release. If it gets much hotter, we'll be simmering in our own juices throughout the country, dying for a drink of clean water.
