Proud Southern Gardener

I'm pretty happy to have been voted Southland finalist for New Zealand Gardener of the Year' (NewZealand Gardener Magazine October edition) Thanks very much to those who nominated me - I know there are plenty of other gardeners in Southland who deserve the award, but I'm pleased to represent the region this time. If you would like to see a Southlander win the national title, this e-address lets you vote and I think it would be a great promotion for us southern gardeners to be noticed on the national level - after all, many northerners think it's too cold to grow successful gardens down here. How wrong they are! Here's a link to the Scoop news release.

You can only vote if you are a subscriber to the New Zealand Gardener magazine I think, but lets hope there are lots in Southland who do. I saw the article (its extensive!) with all the photos of the other finalists from aroundNZ and I think he has a very good chance. i know a couple of the others by reputation and they are deserving also. Do we have a bunnings Wharehouse down here - maybe Dunedin. Some of the prizes come from there.

is this to do with your orchard project Robert? I've heard a lot about the workshop you and your wife did in Waikaia at the weekend. There must have been a lot of orchards around back in the day - my father tells me about the apple trees that grew alongside the railway lines and picking and stashing those on the way to school. Good luck with the competition. No Bunnings here I think but it said in the magazine that there was a trip to the Ellersly Flower Show for the national winner. there will be one there!

Heard you on 1ZB radio this morning talking about setting up gardens at school for kids. Good stuff, that's what we (they) need. It's been too long since kids grew veges and flowers at school. I did way back, but my own kids haven't had the chance, though I hear them talking about it so there might be something happening at their school.

Thanks Gran! Yours might be the very vote that does the trick!
weekend gardener - thankfully anyone can vote, so long as each email account is only used once. Thanks for your comments.
