Our zero-fare buses.

Are we giving enough credit to Invercargill’s zero-fare bus services? Looping around the city and out into the suburbs, the Freebie and the Purple Circle are as good examples as you could get to show that it isn’t necessary to always use a car to get to where you want to go. Our zero-fare service is widely known, appearing on Wikipedia here and admired by other cities around the world. We should be proud of our innovative approach to reducing vehicle emmissions in and around our city.

I use these buses. Excellent! best in the country and who knew Invers would be so far ahead. Thanks Freebie drivers!

I would use them but they aren't always wheelchair friendly, mind you, not much around Invercargill is. How about more accessibility for all of us - including us on wheels.

Make an ammendment to the road rules giving the Freebie right of way in all circumstances

The buses should be running on biodiesel from waste fish & chip oil and tallow from the works (and one day sewage-grown algae?)... that would be an exemplary use of local resources in true Burt Munro style!

Hooray for Invercargill's free bus service - more of this kind of thing is what we need. Better cycleways would be a treat too.

It's the city where 'dreams are possible' after all.

Nick - great ideas! The proposed 20 000 - 30 000 hectares of oilseed rape for Southland (STL August 28) could go toward an efficient transport system in the city as well, although this clashes with the commonsense idea that good land should grow food for people, not vehicles. The 'sewerage grown algae' concept is bound to be the way foward (and may need some 'selling' to the public).
