Sick shag

She didn't make it through the day. We thought yesterday's strong winds were the reason for her seeming exhaustion, but it must have been something more serious.

Sad when it doesnt work out.

We were at the National Falcon centre today. Well worth a visit if you're ever in Rotorua (http://www.wingspan.co.nz). They had an orphan falcon that was found starving in the forestry that didn't make it through the night as well.

An orphan that did make it's photo will be on the new $20 note when it is released.

Falcons are marvelous. When I was a lad, I stitched a hood for the falcon I imagined I might one day train. The hood was leather and had a plume. I remember reading the line, "as the falcon her bells" somewhere, and learned about jesses too. When I was sole manager of a big restoration project and lodge manager to boot, there was a pair of fledgling falcons that adopted the space in front of my house for their entertainment. I used to throw dead mice for them to catch mid-air - they didn't though, but scooped them up when they hit the ground. I found balls of feather, skin and bone outside of the parents nest, high up on a clay cliff-face.
