High society Tory ladies

Lew ‏@LewSOS

Counterfactual: @Metiria turns up to Parliament in overalls and gumboots. What do the high society Tory ladies say then?

Thanks goodness the government wants to talk about important things like flags and jackets, rather than irrelevancies and trivia.

Serious business, dragging red-herrings across the trail that leads to where the bodies are buried.

So Robert what would be your comment be if a list Tory MP who lived in a castle (bought cheap though) and wore designer clothes told a Green MP who represented the East Coast, that she was out of touch
I know you are honest (though slightly deluded IMHO) so do tell

If the Green MP slung back comments about your "list Tory's clothing and home, then I think the same thing as I do about Tolley (and now Collins')catty response(s). Being accused of being 'out of touch' is probably commonplace in Parliament. Hardly a personalsed attack. The best response would be to show how in touch you were, if it was indeed the case. The worst response would be to cite the quality of someone's clothing or house in an ad hom manner, which is what happened here - from the general to the personal.

Hi Ray
I think that the idea behind Tolley's and Collins' criticism, that "the well off cannot advocate on behalf of the poor", is about as valid as the idea that "soldiers cannot fight for peace." I'd like to think that our government agreed that neither is true.
Your hypothetical scenario seems pretty unlikely, none of the current crop of Green MPs seems to have "fashion" as a top ten issue, but let's imagine a Green Minister of a NZ government made such a remark as Tolley or Collins did. I'd be pretty unimpressed. After all, we elect governments to govern, there are much better sources of fashion tips than Parliament TV or Hansard, wouldn't you say? So I'd think to myself "thank goodness I intend to vote National at the upcoming election, they are nowhere near that puerile."
Your argument seems incomplete with its purely hypothetical basis. In reality we have the opposite situation to the o e you hypothesized, and to complete your argument you really need to say something definitive about it. Maybe something like "it's ok when National do it because....."
Over to you.

The reason you're all so inflamed about about Tolley's slap down is that it will resonate with voters.

robertguyton said...

Not true at all. You've misunderstood my thinking and not for the first time. Tolley, in a prescribed way, sought to inflame a side-issue by hitting below the belt. It's a Tory thing.

Nope - you've misinterpreted it.

What voters see is in typical green holier than thou fashion your co-leader suggested Tolley was out of touch. Tolley then pointed out a few facts that would indicate Turei was out of touch with reality. That Turei is now showing off her castle only highlights how 'not-normal' (and therefore possibly out of touch) she is.

Voters may not be all that interested in politics and are sick of the bullshit that goes on between pollies. Turei is donkey deep in it as shown in this exchange. Claiming racism is the last resort when you're losing.

Only cyclopedian Greens could see that Turei wasn't given a damn good slap down. The fact she has then complained about it long and hard is only making it worse. When even John Campbell is asking her hard questions and she just sounds lame in response there's something she's missing.

"What voters see"

You're "voters" then, Paranormal?

I don't think so.

You're getting your 'impressions' from Rightwing blogs:Slater, Farrar, Ludmann et al - 'flunkies', not voters.

Ah no RG. I'm talking to people I meet and listening first hand to parliament, State Radio and Campbell Live. I'm calling it as I see it and as regular (i.e. non partisan voters) express it to me.

Gotta say Turei should keep beating this up as hard as she can go. It's working well for Liarbour and the Nats, regardless of your greenview of it. Whats she claimed now? - racism, elitism, sexism and a few others I've possibly missed. All bullshit epithets people are sick of hearing from 'progressives', and a sure sign she's lost the argument - whatever that was about.

BTW I gave up reading Farrar years ago. But if it makes you feel better that something so clear can't really be how thinking people see it, you go for it.
