81% of 4.7% - Nick Smith exposes John Key

Key says he won the "Say no to asset sales" referendum because over half the voting public didn't bother to vote.
Nick Smith ran a poll in his electorate on a pet issue and claimed victory after only 4.7% of constituents responded - "But 81% of those backed me", Smith proclaimed!
"The reality is", said Smith and Key, "black is white and night is day. Anyone who says different is an eco-terrorist devil-beast". Both men signaled their disinterest in discussing the issue of blatant lying, with a throat-slitting gesture and a sneer.

takes a brave person to decide what was in the minds of anyone who doesn't cast a vote. Some think its because they support the status quo but that's usually they are the status quo strange as it may seem.
I think you should just respect the vote. That way people would come to see their vote does count

Referendums have become devalued by conscious design. How then, should people express their concerns to the Government? Two votes at 3-yearly intervals is not enough. Dictatorial governments and the MPs that make them loudly declare that the election gives them the mandate, but I don't subscribe to that simplistic claim.
