Tubing calves
(From Straight Furrow)
"A big tube goes right down their throat into their stomach...they hate it and they moan...it's not nice for calves or the calf-feeders."
"North Canterbury farmer Denise Cleghorn said on many farms it is now regular practice to give all newborn calves colostrum directly into their stomachs via a tube, and the practice is being advocated in training seminars."
"Why would you ever tube a calf if it can suck?"
The industrialization of dairying doesn't take into account 'small' issues like the brutalization of calves, as described by this North Canterbury farmer. It's another in the series of concerning activities 'on-farm' and damages the dairy industry's 'brand' in the same way that the practice of 'hammering' bobby calves does.
