'Digger' Rodway

What's Maurice doing?
Whose shiny stainless-steel spade is that?
Will he really dig a hole?
Are those his estuary excavating clothes or is he straight from the office?
What would we see reflected in the blade of the spade if the image was bigger?
What time of day do you think it is?
Why isn't he at work?
Is he at work?
His boots show that he's been in deeper mud - why didn't they photograph him there? Was the photographer not armed (or legged) with high gumboots?
The mud doesn't look black and sulfurous like that in the Pourakino estuary - why didn't they come out here and see a really bad example of a dead zone?
Questions, questions...

Shellfish gathering? Obviously not paid enough and has to forage for food. Tho if he traded the shiny spade in he could afford fish and chips

Ha!
Muck-raking, I reckon.
Or searching for lead shot.
That shiny spade, eh!
Marks him as an Otatara Man.
No Riverton councillor would be seen wielding one of those. We dig with good old fashioned rustable steel!

I think he's looking for elephant garlic, to check whether they really do look like elephants. Of course, he's looking in the wrong place, which makes him quite misguided.
And that shiny spade, ay? It's very shiny.
