Clematis Cottage
Robyn and I were invited to help establish a back-yard orchard behind the in-the-throes-of-being-restored Clematis Cottage at Mataura. Today we took a cluster of heritage apple and pear trees to the small town and paced-out where we believed they should be planted and spent some time talking with David about the rest of the garden and how that might look. It was great fun and good to be involved at this early stage. It gave me an opportunity to fight for the retention of the hawthorn hedge, though I can't know if I was successful in that. We were accompanied by another David, who spent years as a gardener at the botanical gardens in Glasgow. We swapped notes on pruning and tree-care. He took a Green man sticker away with him and is researching wassailing tonight :-)
