Dee Street, Invercargill. Why would anyone plant trees like these: gloomy, foreboding, funereal, along the median strip of any town. Could there be more depressing trees, trees with fewer *good features, trees that inspire nothing but trepidation?
I doubt it.
I love the ginkgoes that line the streets on Nelson and brighten the city-scape with their light green-turning-to-butter-yellow-in-the-autumn leaves. They do grow down here, though might not fare well in an exposed street like Dee, but surely we can do better than these monsters!
(In fact, I like the look of these, hence my photo, but only because they are so bizarre, in a Black Forest, gobliny sort of way)
*see the Cocobella girl in the background? I shuffled around so that her thong wasn't in the photo. This is a family show.

What sort of trees are they? They look like.....firewood.
Given the billboard, maybe Norwegian wood?
That's very good. Not being familiar with the billboard, could it perhaps be Norwegian would?
It's the hope of every coming-into-town Southland bloke.
