Cicadian rythms
We watched a cicada metamorphose today. I suppose really all we saw was its emergence from its larval shell, but it was a striking change in a very short time. I'd noticed the larvae scootling about on a nub of wood, looking for a sunny place. It settled then rapidly proceeded to split from head to shoulders then emerge from its old carapace. Quite fabulous really and gentle. It was difficult to see how it did it, as there was no wriggling or straining. Once out, it pumped its wings up with green blood and they set in the twinkling of an eye. My photos aren't great, as it was high noon and very bright, but I caught something of the action, if not the wonder of the transformation.

Beautiful to watch.
We could hear already-emerged cicada calling elsewhere in the garden and wondered if it stimulated ours into action.
