I think a lot of that 'childrens' programming used double entendre. You only have to look at Magic Roundabout or Captain Pugwash (which I now think was brilliant even though I don't recall getting it at the time).
You're right though there was probably no accident that Clutch makes the car go.
That's right, Para! Captain Pugwash is a bit of a shocker and very typical of a kind of British humour - Master Bates, Seaman Stains and Roger the Cabin Boy! But what ever could you mean about the Magic Roundabout :-)
