Corn prices rocket

America's corn growing country and it's in the grip of drought. That drought's set to continue.
We New Zealander's are largely wheat-eaters though, so there's really nothing to worry about, eh!

Except keeps of imported food contains corn syrup and this may cause an increase in food costs. We may have to become self sufficient in food like we used to be....

We've always imported our sugar, bsprout, and then there's coffee... Good to grow the bulk of what we eat and drink here though, I agree.

we once were going to have a sugar beet industry in southland but muldoon canned it because it would have undermined the pacific economies that grow sugar cane

maybe it is time to set aside a few swede paddocks for sugar beet instead

Since you've gone all mainstream and are now doing market updates - what has happened to rocket prices?

Muldoon canned sugar beet?
His wife, I understand, canned peaches.
Either way, we eat too much sugar, as a rule. I grew sugar beet last year. They're not so nice as beet root, but then, nothing is.

They've gone stellar, of course.

Today's paper, btw, is all about wintering barns and has comment from luminaries from around the region, past and present.
