What are the older members of our community thinking and saying about the present political shenanigans?
Geoff is president of Grey Power Southland and writes in his regular Soouthland Express column:
"The world once again is not far off a financial meltdown, a crisis similar to the 1930's and what does the New Zealand Government do? It takes money off the little kids trying to earn a dollar to help themselves or their families., it makes the sick pay a couple of dollars more for prescriptions, cuts roading subsidies in the south, so ratepayers pay more, while pouring millions of dollars into Auckland's infrastructure.
Remember the Government's trickle down theory? "Give those at the top tax relief and benefits will flow down through the economy". It hasn't and it won't.
Would it not have been fairer to take from that sector and give the paperboy a break? Regretfully, fairness doesn't seem to come into the equation."
Well said, Geoff.

My partner is self-employed...our son receives wages for helping out after school etc, and hence is affected by these changes. He was an ardent John Key fan, (sorry RG), but along with the ill-fated education policy debacle, his words were "Does National hate kids or something..what a dick".
Just thought I'd share.
Thanks, Suz. Your partner's political misjudgement is not your fault, don't feel responsible :-) Perhaps you could say to him that National would like children, if those small people were very rich, smoked cigars and had paunches.
They aren't, and don't hence their invisibility to John Key and the 'Smiling Assassins'.
They were our son's words! Terry's far more articulate.
The boy's wising-up. Is he planning to buy any of those 'mummy and daddy' shares, Key and English are dangling?
Hopefully, he won't get the chance to.
Seriously tho', this Budget has got kids talking about politics which has gotta be a good thing. And before Para or Towack blame the teachers, in our experience it's at the kids own volition, self-absorbed little buggers that they are ;-)
Good Lord, Suz! Young people? Thinking for themselves?
Maybe national's inadvertently done something good?
Apparently stranger things have happened at sea...so I'm told...long ago...when unicorns reigned...
At sea? Unicorns?
Narwhals, Suz. Narwhales.
It's a prosaic old world, ours.
At first blush I thought the Gnats had lost it taking pocket money off the kids. Why the hell would they do that? But I am lead to believe its actually a policy you would be happy with RG.
I understand it's to stop a loophople where Trusts and LAQC's were paying their children "wages" from the trust/company and enjoying the lower tax rate that applied.
Yet again the gnats have really stuffed up with the political messaging. they could have had all the kiwi battlers singing their praises for getting stuck into the "wealthy". Instead they've let the left make the running.
