Stooking the afternoon away

Collecting black oat stooks from a farm this afternoon, I got time-warped. The old chaff-cutter had just been shut down and there was still dust in the air. A dozen huge trailers laden with stooks stood under the tin roofed shelters like motionless draught horses. Sacks swollen with chaff were stacked waiting to be trucked off to the stables of the North Island. Other stuff caught my eye too. Here are some of the photos.

  1. I work on a chaff cutter very similar to this one. It is such hard work! :) Great pics.

  2. Hi Niki. I was going to write, "You're lucky!" but I'm not so sure. It looks scratchy, monotonous work, though the romance of it might keep me going for a while. Don't know about day-2 though :-)
I wonder what part of the world you cut chaff in?

  3. Oxford NZ :) I look at chaff cutting as getting paid to do an intense workout. Better than the gym!
