Don't move Southland. We've got you surrounded.

"Multinational giant Shell has joined the hunt for Great South Basin oil and gas but has warned Southlanders not to expect a gold rush."

Lignite mines to the north, gas fracking to the west, deep sea oil drilling to the south and east.

They have just announced the existence of a second leak from Shell's North Sea rig.
Its really frightening to think of all the equipment NZ doesn't have to combat a leak.
With Peak Oil well and truly past, we really are into exploiting marginal oil/gas reserves located often in marginal conditions with the potential for high environmental costs.

Thanks Jonesy
"When asked about potential enviromental risks from rigs, Mr Jager said Shell would make sure its safety standards were robust enough for the Great South Basin.

"In the unlikely event [of a pollution threat] we have a number of things we can call on."

I'll ask him what he means exactly by that.

Robert,

More like "Don't move TO Southland, it's TO fracking cold"

True in the past Ross but in Riverton at least, we've been by-passed by the snow and frigid weather. Go figure!
As to fracking, I learned a lot today around the horseshoe at the Crouching Squirrel and will share my findings here soon.
