Roar Prawn rats on Doc

Why cover the local rat issue (Ulva rat-infested) when this blogger has done it already.
She's not from down here and lays into DOC for the rat-invasion.
If had been to Stewart Island and met the Ulva Island team, she might think differently, but there you are - it's easy to criticize!

Mr Guyton I am probably much more of a Southlander than you are. I am Ngai Tahu, know Stewart Island intimately, my father was born there my family have land there and I make the annual trek to the titi islands. I am a former member of the titi committee and of Rakiura Maori land Trustand still a member of the Awarua Runanga. And a former Southland Times journo to boot. So I know quite a bit about this subject from many, many angles. And DOC needs to be held accountable. there needs to be an inquiry and fast.

Crikey! I'm taking a pasting!
(I've been Busted etc.)
You win BB. Your people have been here a lot longer than mine (I've been to Putauhinu for part of the season, Rarotoka too and Solander - does that rate?)
The 'Rats ate Taukihepa' story puts islanders on edge when it comes to rodent signs and this news from Rakiura ain't good at all.
It seems odd/risky to me that the maintainance of Ulva should fall on DOC's khaki shoulders - they are being starved of funds and influence to the extent that these 'events' will be more common (see the 'gollum' post :-)
The Ulva Island Charitable Trust will know what's really happening here. I'm cautious about slamming DOC over this issue and have zero faith in Kate Wilkinson as Minister of anything to do with the environment - she has no idea imho.
I'm glad you enjoy the gardening columns. Perhaps I should stick to them! :-)

The minister should resign!

Clearly the national party is not taking conservation seriously!
