28 inches!

I'm spending the afternoon repairing old bikes in preparation for the 175-year parade on Saturday: fitting chains, banging out Cotter pins, replacing valves, tightening spokes, oiling chains, reviving the dry leather on saddles, tightening pedals, slipping-on grips, adjusting handle bars, swapping head lamps - metal, rubber and leathery sort of stuff. Messy, knuckle scraping fun!

I am confused I was watching a parade in Riverton Main St in about 1979?? We were all encouraged to dress up in period costumes or at least in clothes similar to colonial times. My girls and I all wore ankle length dresses. From memory they said this was the 100 anniversary or maybe it was the 150th anniversary. This is what I find confusing

Of Interest it was also the year they decided to develop a kindergarten and as result the playcentre which was at the room where the Museum is now was eventually closed. I know this as I was caught up in the controversy ( some Riverton Playcentre supporters were unhappy at this development) been a young Riverton mum at the time I distinctly remember one of the floats in the parade was from the Kindergarten promoters.

Pauline! Were you at the Sesquicentenial celebrations 25 years ago?
So were we (Robyn and I and baby Terry)!
We had just arrived in the town and thought it would be fun to dress up and join in. I remember watching the parade and seeing a bicycle built from an iron bed head pass by. That was the 150th. This year is the demisemisesquicentenial they would have us believe.
The Kindergarten has flourished and the Playcentre extinguished (I was a Playcentre 'Supervisor' in Matuara at about this time!).
Youy must come out for this parade and see if you can detect any changes to the town. The letter to the editor decrying the industrialization of the estuary edge is an interesting one. Hope that flies!
I'll be on an old bicycle on the day - we have spares so if you'd like to easy-ride, let me know :-)

I was not sure if we could re we only have one vehicle now. But after talking with Barney we might see if we can come. B told me he remembers been in the parade back then doing a blade shearing demo. Gee this is bringing back memories of another time. One thing I do remember I hope this years committee get hold of the media especially TV back in 1980 all the oldies at the Riverton Hospital who couldn't go to the parade. Lined up come TV news in excitement to see their town on parade. Unfortunately the then 150yr celebration committee forgot to tell the TVNZ about the celebration. Yes their was some very dissapointed Rivertonians that night with no TV coverage.
