Carbon capture rupture
*Hat-tip BJChip
Feeling comfortable with the claims that the CO2 released by mining lignite and processing the brown stuff into urea or diesel, can be 'sequestered', injected back into the ground where it will safely store for eternity?
Have a read of this report from Canada where it has been tried and found to be entirely unsatisfactory.
"A Saskatchewan farm couple whose land lies over the world's largest carbon capture and storage project says greenhouse gases that were supposed to have been injected permanently underground are leaking out, killing animals and sending groundwater foaming to the surface like shaken-up soda pop."

RG, could you clarify something please. Is It pure CO2 that will be the byproduct of the conversion process?
Or is it contaminated?
I'd have to research that FBB and as I'm just about to leave for Te Anau and a day or two of leisurely loafing ...
I'll get back to you.
There are several 'conversion processes' proposed though, plus there will be CO2 released during mining (a la Pike River).
Mostly, I think that most of the activities and resulting 'products' from lignite mining are 'contaminated/compromised' - not pure.
Thanks RG. Enjoy your break.
Photos of the leaked co2 show animals and algae and other things.http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/prairies/carbon-capture-leak-forces-saskatchewan-couple-to-leave-farm/article1866294/
Cameron Kerr, left, and his wife Jane are shown at their home in Regina on Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2011, in Regina, Sask. A Saskatchewan farm couple whose land lies over the world's largest carbon capture and storage project says greenhouse gases that were supposed to have been injected permanently underground are leaking out, killing animals and sending groundwater foaming to the surface like shaken-up soda pop.
There are 10 photos on that site, that reveal a bit.
It is worth considering: presume Solid Energy did co2 CCS in Southland and it leaked... who would be responsible legally. In the Canadian example the company is denying responsibility and the council denying their is an issue.
something to think about.
Thanks anon. That's just what we're thinking about!
In other news, the Wright brothers gave up after their first flight didn't leave the ground. "It's all just too hard" they said.
Good point about the various parties running for cover when they completely stuff up some-one's property. That's the great thing about government working with big business - every-one but the victims agree that it's not their fault, but eventually, tax payers and rate payers will pick up the tab.
What's the bet the government also had the ratepayers and tax payers fund tax breaks for these "climate friendly" initiatives.
Just like the tax-breaks our Government seem committed to offer the industries that would like to realease the Carbon Dogs here.
Have you read this Zen?

Not until now. Thanks for the link. That's exactly the type of problem I was referring to.
