I found this letterbox and fence at the entrance to a house in Nightcaps very interesting, given that the towns essential industry is coal mining. The homeowner chose black, coal black as the 'colour' scheme.
Perhaps this is the home of the mine manager.

Coal black is a fitting colour, but for a different reason: that is where the convent used to be. It's gone now, but the Catholic school is still there, around the corner.
Dave - it's really interesting to learn that, though I should have known - I was teaching at St Pat's today. I didn't put two and two together.
Were the nun's habits black then?
They tell me that the weather there is often far better than in Invercargill and certainly today was a beaut - blue sky, no wind. The kids set up a table on the tennis courts and we played ping-pong.
I don't know that much... my one experience of the interior of anywhere Catholic was a funeral. I've just driven through Nightcaps a few times and vaguely recalled that it got loaded up on a truck and shifted to Te Anau (unless I'm getting it confused with somewhere else). (I also cheated a bit and looked it up on Google Maps to make sure it was the place I thought it was!)

Ruahines - it'd be brave soul that smashed in a nun's letterbox!
I've seen Sister Bertrille in full flight and know not to mess with any one with an unstable habit!
Dave - I too have attended a funeral in a Catholic church - for the driver of the car that plunged off the Tiwai 'wharf' many years ago - sad business - and found it quite a strange experience. Lots of 'audience participation' which seemed curious me.
