Shadbolt fears water privatization

In his column in today's Southland Times, Invercargill mayor Tim Shadbolt again directs our attention to the unhealthy direction we are going in regarding the control of our drinking water supplies. Tim's been alerting us to this for some time and I wonder if he's becoming frustrated by the public's lack of concern over the issue of private control over what is presently a publicly owned resource. Tim says,
"We supply unlimited water to our ratepayers for 85c a day. Neither the Government or private sector could provide such an efficient service, but I'm convinced this will soon be privatised."
I reckon Tim's right.

Perhaps also the drive to do away with regional councils has something to do with the fact that they all have port companies that John Key would like to sell to his mates as per the recent productivity commission report.

Tim himself being rather guilty of viewing the potential demise of regional councils as a "windfall"

Why must our leadership continaully seek new ways of placing our children into financial servitude by looking at every essential service as a crock of cash they can spend on new and glittery things like stadium and cycleways rather than as the foundations of a dynamic economy - are we run by losers or worse?

Agreed in full, darkhorse. The day Southport comes up for sale to foreign interests will be a dark day indeed and perhaps then the good citizens of Invercargill might begin to question Mr Roy about his conscience or lack thereof.
