Nothing to worry about here in Southland

"Southland's economy is better than it has been in years", according to John Scandrett, Otago Southland Employers Association chief executive. Speaking at the Association's briefing to outline the forecast for 2012, Mr Scandrett poured cold water on the argument that we need Solid Enegy's proposed lignite mine for our region's survival - clearly we're doing fine without it. Mr Scandrett said, " Overall, the economic landscape in Southland is probably as stable as it's ever been, "As the heartland of the agri-sector, it is solid and has not been this good in many years."
Mr Scandrett is talking farming here and should get on the phone to Don Elder and tell him he and his farm-destroying SOE are not needed here and that we are doing just fine without them, thank you very much!

Quite correct, without Solid Energy the Mataura people have numerous employment opportunities and if the lignite proposals go ahead those opportunities will narrow considerably.

That said, bsprout, there will be other as yet unexplored possibilities for employment in and around Mataura that don't require digging the place up. Investment in other 'industries', perhaps green-initiatives, would provide a boost to the area and ease the pain at having missed out on the mining jobs. Is anyone trying to develop alternatives?

At last someone with common sense can see how ridiculous and living in te past Elders proposals are... Heck we have been educated now we know better we know there is other answers than mining finite resources for our energy needs
