This fruit is a quince, believe it or not. I grew the tree from a seed from some quince or other and the vague parentage is showing with this fruit; no beauty contest winner, this one, nor would it win the heart of someone selecting for quality in some research orchard or other. But, the little guy has a place here in my garden and who knows, one day it may shine out of all proportion to its present form.
