Plenty of Southlanders would agree with you, Pauline but not all bamboos are the same. There are well behaved, elegant bamboos. It's just a matter of finding them.
Ah!Thanks, Sophie, I'll seek that variety out. Methven, traditionally, will provide the cold that bamboo is apparently tolerant of. In fact, it'll probably prove itself one way or the other, tonight, going by the forecasts :-)

Robert bamboo is a horrible plant etc to grow .... multiplies madly and is hard to get rid off

I'm in Methven and have just planted Fargesia Nitida, an elegant clump forming bamboo that is very cold tolerant apparently!
